Australia has reached an impasse in our policy on the processing of asylum seekers. The High Court’s ruling of the unlawfulness of the so-called Malaysia solution is an opportunity not to be squandered. Australia must now legally acknowledge our policy of offshore processing as a shirked responsibility. The time has finally come to take the mature, humane and fair route of processing asylum seekers on the Australian mainland – it makes economic, legal and compassionate sense.
